"I chose to go to law school because I thought that someday, somehow I’d make a difference." – Christopher Darden.

Personally, I became an attorney for some of the following reasons:

  • A Passion for Justice. I am deeply passionate about justice and legal systems. As an attorney, my goal was to advocate for fairness, uphold the rule of law, and ensure that individuals' rights are protected.

  • A Desire to Help Others. Law offers a platform to help individuals, families, and communities navigate complex legal issues. As an attorney, I get to help others solve problems, provide legal advice, and support clients through challenging situations.

  • An Interest in Law and Legal Issues. I have a natural curiosity and fascination with legal concepts, policies, and regulations. I enjoy the intellectual challenges that come with studying and practicing law.

  • My Advocacy Skills: One of my strengths is communication, negotiation, and persuasion. Growing up, I detested bullies. I made friends and learned from so many different people who entered my life. I encouraged my peers to see the good in others. - always. I also encouraged them to treat their fellow man like family. I was a debater in school, won awards, and participated in public speaking opportunities. I was elected my high school’s Student Body President. I enjoyed speaking for others, that sometimes couldn't speak for themselves or had a hard time finding the words they wanted to convey. Advocacy is a central aspect of legal practice, whether in court or during negotiations.

  • My Career Opportunities: Law provides a wide range of career opportunities. Attorneys can specialize in various areas of law, such as criminal, civil, corporate, environmental, immigration, intellectual property, and more.

  • For Financial Stability: The practice of law can offer a path to financial stability and potentially lucrative career prospects, especially for those who establish successful practices or work in highly demanding fields. While the financial aspect should not be the sole motivator, a career in law can be financially rewarding. Successful attorneys can earn competitive salaries, especially in specialized fields or private practice.

  • My Impact on Society: As an attorney, I know that I can have a significant impact on society by influencing legal precedents, shaping legislation, or advocating for social change. Many attorneys often aspire to make a positive difference in their communities or at a broader level.

  • My Personal Fulfillment: I personally find personal fulfillment in practicing law, deriving satisfaction from helping clients achieve their goals or resolving legal disputes. In addition, there is prestige and respect in the legal profession. Attorneys are often seen as respected professionals in society due to their role in upholding the law and advocating for justice.

  • My Family and Cultural Influence: I am Nigerian. My family traditions and cultural expectations undoubtedly played a role in influencing me to pursue a legal career. I personally had the opportunity to have several mentors growing up who were attorneys, that inspired me to follow a similar path of becoming a lawyer. At the same time, there were so many injustices I witnessed growing up. There was a time my family and I were heading on a long family vacation on the highway. A police officer stopped our family minivan --- and proceeded to search our vehicle. He made four children and two parents wait on the side of the road while ransacking through our things. My father was humble and respectful throughout the experience. I could see the fear and frustration in my mother's face. As a little girl, it was a very traumatic event that I still remember until this day.

  • Many Varied Career Options: Law degrees open doors to diverse career options beyond traditional legal practice, including roles in government, academia, business, nonprofit organizations, and more.

  • The Challenge and Growth: The legal profession offers continuous learning and intellectual challenges, which can be appealing to those who seek personal and professional growth.

  • Problem-Solving Skills: As an attorney, I enjoy problem-solving, critical thinking, and attention to detail, qualities that are valued in various sectors - including nursing. Law is often about finding solutions to complex problems. Attorneys enjoy the intellectual challenge of analyzing legal issues, applying precedent, and developing arguments to resolve disputes.

  • Intellectual Stimulation: Law involves continuous learning and intellectual growth. Attorneys are often required to research, analyze, and adapt to changes in the law, keeping their minds sharp.

The legal profession is demanding, requiring years of education, training, and dedication. Individuals considering a career in law should carefully evaluate their interests, skills, and motivations to ensure it aligns with their personal and professional goals. Happy Lawyering!
